A very useful book for pastors and others who arrange and care for the "things" of worship. The Witness of Preaching by Thomas Long (Westminster John Knox Press, ). An excellent basic preaching text, particularly on the form and function of the sermon. * Worshiping with United Methodists: A Guide for Pastors and Church Leaders.   In other words, I don’t think preaching is the only important form of communication in the New Testament or in the church. There is a place for visual analysis like Look at the Book and a place for discussion and a place for Q&A and a place for poetic expression and song, et cetera, et cetera.

In reality, preachers should preach the Word in the power of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture and the one who illuminates it’s meaning (2 Peter ). Rather than getting in the way, the Spirit aids listeners in receiving the Word by faith (1 Corinthians ). Reason #9: Their people prefer other types of preaching.
